When should you replace a planer blade?

A sharp blade leaves a smooth, shiny surface with fine, even shavings. However, a worn blade gives clear warning signs. For example, the wood starts to tear around knots, the surface looks fuzzy, and you may see burn marks or smell hot wood. The motor also works harder, so the planer feels slow and the brushes wear faster. As soon as you notice these signs, change the blades.

How to get longer life from each blade

• Clean off resin and sawdust after each job, because sticky resin makes the edge drag.
• Check the wood for nails and screws before planing, since one nail can chip the edge.
• Take light passes on hard wood instead of one deep cut.
• Store spare blades in their pack, so the edge stays dry and free from rust.

Always unplug the planer or remove the battery before changing a blade. Also, replace both blades together so the drum stays balanced.
